Transforming Energy Planning with Open Source and Open Data

To Accelerate the World's Transition to Sustainable Energy

Our Global Impact With Open Energy Planning

Open Energy Transition (OET) is a non-profit environmental consultancy, think tank, and software development company committed to addressing the challenges of energy planning.

We develop, co-maintain, and apply widely used open-source tools while supporting a broad range of modeling platforms to meet diverse needs. We also build secure, open-source applications that integrate proprietary data, ensuring accessibility, privacy, and local self-maintenance without requiring public sharing. As co-maintainers, we contribute to the development of Python for Power Systems Analysis (PyPSA), the PyPSA-based European and global sector-coupled energy systems models PyPSA-Eur and PyPSA-Earth, the Linopy optimization interface and the atlite library for converting weather data to energy systems data. We also use and support a wide range of other energy modeling tools such as GenX, Switch, OSeMOSYS, and Calliope.

Services

Open Energy Transition (OET) is a non-profit organization working to transform global energy planning by promoting the use of open-source models and data. As the world moves toward net-zero emissions, existing energy systems face growing complexity, and high investment needs, requiring coordination and innovation. OET addresses these challenges by developing and supporting open tools and datasets that offer greater accessibility, flexibility, and collaboration, at lower cost. This is essential for better, faster, and more inclusive decision-making.

Customized Solutions

Does your energy planning study or tool not exist yet or can it not be reproduced? We deliver customized reports and models that empower our clients to be independent by being reproducible, enabling them to continue using and improving the tools after the project.

Software Development and Maintenance

We develop and maintain open source software for energy system modelling, and help integrate this into workflows and data pipelines. We are specialized in Python, data viz-craft, machine learning and optimization in the energy domain, and can support a wide range of energy models, including models you have developed in-house. If any data or tool requirements are not yet fulfilled, we are happy to close the gaps.

Support

Open source software is free to use, but not free to maintain. We offer support contracts to ensure that the tools are maintained and improved. This way, we can ensure that the tools are always up to date and that our clients can focus on their work.

Training

As an open source project stands not only on the shoulders of giants, but also on the shoulders of the community. To continue building up a strong user, developer and maintainer network is essential for us. We offer training to help our clients to become independent and part of the community.
